Wellsburg Days by Timothy Toeset is the perfect murder mystery novel for teens and young adults. The book takes place during the summer of 1959. Three boys are enjoying their summer vacation doing the typical boy things. They hang out together, ride their bikes, play baseball, and read. The biggest excitement every summer is when Wellsburg Days happens. There’s a carnival and a parade involved, and the kids can’t wait. The carnival comes and goes, and the kids think that they’re back to their boring summer. However, they get pulled into a mystery when they stumble upon a body in a creek. How did the body get into the creek? Who is it? You’ll have to read this book to find out.

The book had all of the essential makings of a good book. The storyline was clear, interesting, and easy to follow. There was a concrete problem and solution. The characters were developed well without going into too much unnecessary detail. All of these elements were held together by a style of writing that was relaxed and engaging. The book was suspenseful, and I often found myself wanting to pick it up and see what would happen next.

The vocabulary was perfect for teen readers. There were a few words that were challenging enough to need to look them up. These words were used multiple times within the book to give readers a chance to solidify their understanding of the word once they’ve looked it up. The book was also professionally edited, which is always a plus. There were a few errors here and there, but they were all minor and didn’t detract from the story.

My favorite part of the book was the way the author incorporated a few lessons on prejudice against Jewish people throughout the book. There were tidbits of history included without ever seeming like it was coming from a textbook. The author used a style that guides the reader away from accepting prejudiced thoughts without ever ranting or telling the reader what they should feel. This can be really difficult to do; I commend the author for his work.

I give this book a full 5 out of 5 stars. It was truly an excellent book. The book was professionally edited, and the plot was great. I have no reason to give it anything less than a perfect score. I would recommend this to teenagers who love murder mysteries. Because of the murder within the book, younger readers probably shouldn’t read this one.
