Barnaby and Clare by Derrick Alexander is a very short children's story. The book had a total of 25 pages and it was the shortest story I have ever read. Barnaby and Clare are siblings who love music. They like different genres of music and can play different musical instruments. Barnaby likes hip-hop and can play the drums, while Clare likes classical music and can play the violin.  Barnaby calls Clare to play with him, but she refuses because she wants to practice playing her violin. Belinda and Ben are friends with Barnaby and Clare, they come over to play and join them in making music. They were having so much fun, but it gets too loud and Barnaby and Clare's parents yell at them to turn it down.

I have read a lot of children's book and I usually do enjoy them, but I found a lot lacking in this book. First of all, there was no moral point in the story, there was no conflict, there was nothing to sympathize with and there were no admirable traits that could be learned. It was just a basic read for children. I was able to read the book several times within the space of an hour because it was very short.

The illustrations were my favorite part, it looked like a child's art work. It would be easy for children to connect the pictures with their own personal drawings and relate to it. The illustrations was cute, but not quite self-explanatory.

I thought Derrick Alexander left a lot unsaid in this children's book. There is more to be done and there's more that children can learn from reading the book. Children's books are more than a mixture of pictures and a few words, it is an opportunity to impact a child's educational journey and foster a desire to learn.

I did not enjoy the book, neither did I hate it. It was just too simple of a read. I thought perhaps I was too matured as an adult and could not understand what children will enjoy, so I read the book to my little cousin. At the end of the book she looked at me like "huh? is it over?", and continued staring at me expecting more to be said. It proved to me that the book was too short and there was nothing to pique the interest of a child. There was no conflict, there was barely anything in it.

I will rate the book a 2 out of 4 stars. Children's books require more than a few words and pictures. I will not recommend the book to anyone to read, except they are looking for a very simple short read.

That's a great review. I liked the part about how the kids got yelled at to turn down the volume.
