Roarasaurus: The Roaring Soaring Dinosaur is an endearing story about friendship by Great Aunt Rita. Illustrated by Mike Sofka, his vivid, colorful pictures fill the pages that aid the telling of the tale.

The story begins with Great Aunt Rita gift shopping for her great nephew Jake’s birthday. Appreciating his love for dinosaurs, she purchases a Tyrannosaurus Rex that is supposed to roar and walk about. Initially, the dinosaur toy does nothing, which makes the children sad. But once the batteries are inserted, they are in for a surprise as the dinosaur comes to life in full force! How will the family tame this wild toy? Can they discover how to play with it properly, or will they discard it out of frustration? Find out when you read Roarasaurus: The Roaring Soaring Dinosaur.

This book was an enjoyable read. Containing twenty-four pages, it moved quickly and incorporated a deep message. The first few lines reminded me of B.J. Novak’s The Book with No Pictures. It hinted this book held an amusing message that would make the audience giggle and convinced you that it actually occurred.

Noteworthy are the illustrations provided by Mike Sofka. Each page featured a brightly colored picture parallel to the reading. The vivid details make this story enjoyable to a child or a group of children in almost any situation. Sofka’s art adds depth to the adorable tale.

I genuinely enjoyed the message this story portrayed. When the dinosaur toy got out of hand, the children wanted to abandon it because they didn’t know how to play with it. Once the mother encouraged the children to befriend it, they learned a valuable lesson. This universal message is relevant, especially with today’s children. Due to Covid’s seclusion for almost two years, children struggle to interact with one another. Periodically children (and adults) need that little nudge that encourages them to befriend someone who seems odd or unloveable.

Great Aunt Rita has earned a full 5 out of 5 stars with this story. It is a great read for adolescent children between the ages of 3 to 10 and beyond. Parents, teachers, and anyone who attends to young children will find this story endearing and sweet to narrate.

I reviewed this book as well. I never thought to tie it into how COVID may have affected young people. That is an insightful take on the story! You're absolutely right that people of all ages can use reminders to befriend those who may be different than us.
