Chrysanthemum By Kevin Henkes

Post by Ronni_Michelle »

My mother bought me this book as a child. My parents have since lost count of how many times I made them read it to me. I have a unique name for a girl. Ronni. I feel this book is the perfect book for a child with a unique and different name. The book is filled with beautiful illustrations that will mesmerize children and make parents laugh. Chrysanthemum is the name of the mouse. She is picked on and laughed at for her name. The book captures the inner struggle of a child being bullied as she tries to still love herself and her name. The parents struggle with trying to help her. The illustrations show her father reading several psychology books to learn how to help her and understand what his daughter is going through. In the end she learns to love her name and herself.

I really recommend this book to any parent who has a child with a unique and different name. This wonderful book helped me to love myself and my name. Also like the character in the book, two of my favorite foods still to this day is ketchup on almost everything and a bowl of mac n cheese. Chrysanthemums are my favorite flowers. I played a character in a show for 4 years and I named her Mary Chrysanthemum. This book influenced my life greatly. I mailed the author a letter this past year thanking him for the book and let him know how much this beautiful story impacted my life.

Every child should have this book. They will learn to love themselves. I bought this book new recently, so when my husband and I have our first child, they will also have this precious book.

I am a kindergarten teacher and we use this book at the beginning of the school year when we are getting to know everyone. It helps the students realize that everyone is different and that's ok! Everyone has a different meaning behind their name. This is a great story!

This was always one of my favorite books. Don't have an unusual name but certainly felt like an unusual kid! ;)

I always start with Chrysanthemum for my third graders at the start of the year. It's a great book to go with acceptance and kindness. It also introduces my students to Kevin Henkes. We read a lot of his books throughout the year and they learn to love him as much as I do.
