Review of Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula
R.F. Kristi's Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula is a cute and exciting book for kids. As the title suggests, the story is about a group of smart cats who use their detective skills to go on a rescue mission in North Korea.
Inca and her team were thrilled to hear that their mother, Missy, had been chosen to judge a contest in South Korea, where she would also show off her latest cheese creation. They had just returned from an exciting mission to protect Sri Lanka's history. Excited for another international adventure, they quickly set off on their journey. However, a potential obstacle arose when Enzo, Missy's rival, revealed nefarious intentions. As they boarded the plane, Inca and her team worried about how they would protect Missy from harm. When they got there, their guide, Ye-Jun, met them and told them not to worry about finding a place to stay, even though it wasn't easy. Could Inca and her team successfully keep Missy safe from Enzo's scheme?
R.F. Kristi's book is a fantastic read. I appreciate the historical context included, such as the explanation of how the Korean demilitarized zone was formed. In addition, the author included beautiful illustrations depicting vivid and entertaining scenes. The story also teaches the importance of cooperation, as seen through the eyes of the Inca cats. Young readers will find themselves engaged by the characters and plot and learning about a different culture and its traditions. This book also highlights the importance of family, love, and friendship, making it a tremendous cognitive adventure for children.
The spacing between words in this book did not appeal to me as it was inconsistent. Sometimes, the words are close together, and at other times, they are far apart, which I initially thought was a mistake, but now I believe it's a conscious design choice. However, I think the book would benefit from a glossary or an explanation of some of the words used. For example, I found the words "moi" and "bon voyage" and thought the author would include the meaning in parenthesis or the glossary. In addition, not all children would understand the French words used, and it would be helpful if the author provided the meaning of these words beside them.
I would give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars due to its captivating storyline and illustrations. Also, the book was exceptionally well-edited, and I found no errors while reading it.
The story, although brief, was interesting, and I highly recommend it to children aged nine and above. They will be able to understand most of what is going on, especially the fights between North and South Korea and how they were settled. However, younger children may need assistance from adults.

I like the idea of using animals as detectives, as it adds an element of fun and adventure to the story.
