Teaching children the proper values ​​in life from an early age is crucial. One of these values ​​refers to respecting all people regardless of their differences. We are all different in some ways but equally valuable as people. Purple Chicken Feathers by Serena Caldwell is a children's picture book that teaches children the importance of respecting everyone, regardless of who they are, what they are, and especially how they look.

The story follows a little purple chick who is different from his siblings. His siblings have the usual yellow feathers and avoid socializing with him. The little purple chick is lonesome and has no one to spend time with just because he is different from the others. One day he encounters a chameleon and an octopus and learns about their ability to change colors depending on the environment. He also meets a caterpillar that turns into a butterfly not long after. The little chick realizes he is not the only one who is different and that some would really like to be his friends.

I truly enjoyed this children's picture book in many ways. First of all, I like the lesson introduced to the children, which is the importance of not discriminating against anyone and realizing that everyone is equally valuable regardless of appearance. Also, the illustrations in the book are gorgeous and look skillfully, professionally, and well-drawn. I also like the balance of the text and the image part, which is right as it should be. No one component prevails over the other. Furthermore, the whole atmosphere of the story seems cozy. The story is ideal for young children, as the author uses simple words and concise sentences. Also, I didn't encounter any errors, and the book seems exceptionally well edited.

If I had to emphasize some negative element, it would be the abrupt ending. It could have been elaborated more thoroughly, with a special focus on the characters who did not behave nicely towards the little purple chick.

All in all, I decided to rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I have no significant reason to lower this rating, although the ending of the book is a bit abrupt. I enjoyed the story in all aspects, and I believe most children would also enjoy it. I would primarily recommend the book to children going to kindergarten, but also to all parents who want to teach their children about some important lessons, such as the importance of respect.
