The book The Hummingbird Wars, written by Ron Paschall, is a children’s novel following the adventures of a small group of hummingbirds. The story begins with the introduction of Huber Hummingbird. Hubert has made an enemy of Hatchet, a large hawk. In an attempt to save his family from the hawk, Hubert resorts to unleashing a powerful weapon, summoning all nearby hummingbirds to his side. Although Hubert was able to save his family, many nests were left undefended due to his call, and many eggs were lost. Hubert was blamed, and he and his family were banished.

Fast-forward 200 years later, and Hubert Hummingbird’s descendent, who is also named Hubert, embarks on a mission to right the wrongs committed 200 years ago. With the help of his family, friends, and other birds and critters he meets along the way, Hubert fights to reclaim the hummingbird’s meadow and restore his family’s honor.

I liked that this story was entertaining as well as educational. While I was absorbed in the story, I also learned many new and exciting facts about hummingbirds. I also appreciated that the author included an educational section before the actual story so that I would have a better grasp of the novel as I was reading.

This book was also very fast-paced, which I felt was suiting since the story was about hummingbirds. Even though the story was relatively quick, I never got lost or confused, and it was very easy to keep track of the characters. The fast-paced story also kept me engaged and on the edge of my seat as I waited to see what was going to happen next.

The little illustrations drawn by Sue Hull were very cute and charming. There were not very many pictures included in the book, but the few that were added were beautifully detailed. The vibrancy of the illustrations was very pleasant to see and provided a wonderful visual representation of what was occurring in the story.

There was nothing I disliked about this book. The characters were fun, and the story was very engaging. Additionally, I noticed no grammatical errors as this book was exceptionally well edited.

Due to the reasons listed above, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This would be a great book for people who enjoy bird watching as a hobby. This would also be an especially fun book for kids. This would be a great story to read in class or as a bedtime story.
