The first book in the Granny Geng Mysteries series is Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe. The themes of friendship, honesty, courage, close-knit families, jealousy, and charity, particularly toward those with special needs, are at the centre of the novel. The novel also depicts issues that young people run into. Bullying among youngsters, especially those with special needs, maybe one of these issues. It also shows children from broken families who yearn for attention. Throughout the book, there are also examples of parents who ignore their children because they are too busy at work.

The book tells the story of Donny and his sister's adventures in California. They were compelled to relocate and spend two years with their grandparents while their parents were serving as missionaries in Africa. Being separated from her pals from primary school in Wichita, Kansas, at first gave Mary Grace trouble. With all the fun they would have in California, Donny, who has a handicap, was excited. Mary Grace's adjustment was more challenging than Donny's, who quickly adjusted to the new school and found friends with other devoted marble collectors. During the school year, she had to make new friends and deal with bullying. The Grandmother Gang came to her rescue, and she didn't have to face it alone. Thanks to the Grandmother Gang, she can pinpoint who is responsible for the bullying. Who could have done this?

I thought it was fascinating how the author portrayed the two main characters' relationships and how Mary Grace treated her brother with love and compassion instead of providing him with special treatment due to his disability. This book was particularly excellent at handling difficult social issues, including the stigmatization of those with special needs. By keeping the story interesting and exhilarating, the author managed to transmit important facts, viewpoints, and values throughout the whole book. I also admire the author's writing style and the book's meticulous formatting.

There was nothing about this book that I found unpleasant. That was a beautiful and enjoyable read.

Without a question, I rated this book 5 out of 5 stars because of how well the author talked about issues that are usually overlooked. The book was exceptionally well-edited and error-free. I recommend this book to anyone who interacts with children, whether socially or at work. This includes teachers, parents, especially those of children with disabilities, and parents of children who are bullied. All readers, regardless of age, should read the book.
