In the time of Rome, the greatest empire the world has ever seen. You think of riches, power and a luxury life filled with comfort. None of these things belong to Nic, a young slave who works in a mine outside of Rome. With a mother who is also a slave working elsewhere and dead father who he has never known, Nic is left to care for his younger sister alone.

He thinks this will be his life forever, but when he enters a cave filled with Julius Caesar treasures and steals the magic bulla hidden inside his life changes forever. However this magic is more dangerous than he could ever imagine and the one who wields it is cursed by Julius Caesar himself.

With the curse taking ahold of him and hidden enemies at every turn, some who would kill to get the magic of the bulla for themselves. Nic turns to some unlikely allies to help him earn the trust of the empire and his place in the world. But when he is betrayed by said allies at a critical moment, where will he stand?

This book was amazing and displayed Rome and it's people perfectly. Nic the young hero of the book is defiant, stubborn and stands for himself. Making deals with some of the highest people in Rome to try to earn his freedom and his place in the world as not just a slave, but an actual person.

Jennifer A. Nielsen really out did herself with this book. I am happy to note that it is just as good if not better than her last trilogy The Ascendence. And if you liked that trilogy you'll love this one which I would be happy to recommend to all my friends.
