Review of Will You Talk to Me?

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Will You Talk to Me?" by Margie Carstens.]
Hummingbirds are pretty incredible animals. Being one of the smallest birds, you may think they would be easily scared. In Will You Talk to Me? by Margie Carsten, there is a very brave hummingbird. He’s not scared of big birds coming after him. A girl is looking at the ocean and notices the hummingbird chasing away a hawk. She is so amazed at his bravery that the girl asks the hummingbird if he would talk to her. He does answer her, imparting some impressive wisdom. What does he say? I love the message of this story. The idea is that everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. It’s all about how you can use your unique gifts. I think this is a great message for everyone, but especially children, who often feel as though they have to fit in or be like other people. Sometimes our strengths lie in our differences, and this book highlights this fact. The girl in the story doesn’t feel confident and is bullied by others, so it’s very relatable. The illustrations were professional and beautiful to look at.
My only complaint is that the girl was referred to as "she" the whole time and was never actually given a name. It’s not a major drawback, but it would have been nice to be able to call her something instead of she. Perhaps the author made that choice to make all female readers think they could be the main character, but I still found it strange.
Overall, I rate Will You Talk to Me? 5 out of 5 stars. The minor drawback of not giving a main character a name was not enough to reduce a star. The book was exceptionally well edited and had a beautiful message.
I would recommend this book to children who are struggling with self-confidence or who feel different than others. The hummingbird imparts some great wisdom for these types of children to learn from.
