Review of Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula
Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula by R.F. Kristi follows the adventures of Inca, a Siberian cat who is the leader of Inca & Company. Inca & Company is a group of furry friends who solve crimes. Missy, Inca's human mother, was invited by Le Cordon Bleu to be a judge at a patisserie competition in South Korea. On arrival, they meet their tour guide and translator, Ye-Jun. Ye-Jun insists that they stay at his house instead of their small hotel room. They found out that he was separated from his sister Ji, who travelled to North Korea with her cat Bo-Mi, and the siblings lost contact with each other. The cat detectives decide to help reunite the siblings. How do they overcome the challenge of crossing the border? Will they succeed in their mission? Read this book to find out.
Kristi's writing style was simple. She used words that are easy to understand and illustrations that will capture children's attention and also give them a visual manifestation of the scene. I loved how the titles of the chapters were the days in April in which the action occurred. This book buttresses the need for teamwork, peace, trust, and love. Korean dishes, culture, and history were explained, and the author also included the meaning of some Korean names.
Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula is part of a series, but it can be read as a standalone. The siblings Ye-Jun and Ji are used to symbolize North Korea and South Korea. Through these characters, the importance of peace is further shown in a way children can understand.
I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. This rating is because I found no errors in this book, showing that it was exceptionally well-edited. The author did a good job giving Inca the qualities of a good detective. This is seen in Inca's ability to analyse facts and make great decisions. There was nothing to dislike. The characters and plots were well-developed, and there was no boring part.
I recommend this book to children between the ages of 7 and 12. It's an entertaining book that teaches them about the importance of peace and teamwork, and it's a fun way to learn about Korean culture.
