The Smooshlepuff Hugger by Cynthia Dvorsky-Stankevich is a children's book that tells the story of Smooshlepuff, who loved love and didn't know why. He wondered what love, hugs, and smiles were good for. In search of answers to his questions, he went on adventures and met new friends. He went on more than one adventure until he finally realized what love was. I like that the book teaches children about feelings and expressing them. I like that it teaches them empathy and how to help others. I like how Smooshlepuff could show others another way to look at things. It teaches children that things aren't always what they seem and that we can see the full side of the glass.
The words used in the book didn't seem simple to me. I don't know if they are understandable for kids. I found some of the conversations a bit philosophical, which I don't see as appropriate for a children's book. For example, the conversation between Smooshlepuff and the duck.
I found the illustrations to be simple. They have nice colors, and they seem like children's drawings. I believe this would appeal to some people, but not all. The book also needed some more illustrations. However, I like that the writer did the illustrations. Also, I can see that the book's editing was exceptional.
The book was nice and educational, but had the drawbacks I mentioned. Therefore, I rate it three out of five stars. I recommend the book to children of an older age to be able to understand the philosophy in the book. Parents can also generate some good discussions with their children through the book. The book ended with a comment about God's love being the truest love. I believe this was the intention of the writer, but the book isn't religious as a whole and can fit everyone.
