Animal Village is a children’s book about animals in the village of Zindair (West Africa) who are dealing with a lack of resources. Nelda LaTeef is the author and illustrator of this story that showcases what happens when these animals have to find a way to fix this problem.

Chief Zamboha (a lion who rules Zindair and all its inhabitants) calls a meeting so that he can inform his community that their water supply is drying up. West Africa is known for its dry seasons and wet season that follow it, but this year, no rain has fallen. Timba is a female tortoise who lives in Zindair and has a possible solution. Will she be able to save the lives of her village with her plan? You’ll have to get the book to find out.

If you have a child in the age range of 6 to 9 who loves wildlife animals, I recommend you get this book for them. Aside from the lion and tortoise that I’ve already mentioned, you will see a giraffe, elephant, zebra, ostrich, and other animals. The good thing that I love about this book is that kids will find a “Did you know…” section at the beginning of the book that provides fun facts about Africa. I did not know that most of the world’s chocolate is produced from Africa’s cocoa.

There are a couple of life lessons that can be pulled from this story. The one that stood out to me was that teamwork is needed to complete a task successfully. When the animals are brainstorming ways to get water, they come together at a point to test any solution. Kids will learn about working with others in a team is highly productive.

I had such an enjoyable time reading this book; it was informative, teaches a life lesson, and the illustrations are lively. There was nothing I disliked about this story and I found no spelling or grammar errors. I’m glad to give this exceptionally well-edited children’s book a high rating of 5 out of 5 stars.
