Catherine A. Pepe’s children's book, Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures, recounts the story of two siblings, Mary Grace and Donny, who are part of the Miller family. Donny, who has Down syndrome, and his older sister, Mary Grace, enjoy visiting the zoo with their family and engaging in activities like picnics and taking pictures with the animals. However, the family's plans are disrupted when their dad, who is a priest, is assigned to do missionary work in Kenya. As a result, their mom will accompany him, and the children will have to stay with their grandparents on a ranch in California. Mary Grace, who initially felt anxious about the new environment, will soon discover the joys of California.

One of the book's strengths is the Miller parents' relationship with their children, which is depicted as patient, kind, and understanding. Despite the circumstances being beyond their control, they take the time to explain and apologize to their children. This portrayal of parents as compassionate and attentive is admirable and highlights the importance of good parenting.

Another strength of the book is Mary Grace's love and care for her brother, Donny. She is patient with him, stands up for him when necessary, and does not view him as a burden. Her dedication to her brother is a valuable lesson for children, teaching them about the importance of empathy, kindness, and unconditional love.

The book also addresses the issue of bullying, which is a prevalent problem among children today. The author handles the subject skillfully, giving the bully a chance to change rather than condemning him. This approach is a valuable lesson for children and teachers alike, emphasizing the importance of patience and understanding in dealing with problematic behavior.

Overall, Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures is a well-written and engaging book that is easy to read and follow. The grammar is simple and straightforward, and there are no errors in the text. As such, it is an exceptional piece of writing, and I would give it 5 out of 5 stars. I highly recommend this book to both children and adults, as it contains valuable lessons that can benefit anyone who reads it.

The book sounds intriguing with excellent character development. As a parent, leaving one's children behind for duty can be challenging, but it was heartening to see that the children made the most of their time, having fun and experiencing adventures. It's also notable that one of the main characters in the book has Down syndrome, which provides an opportunity for children to learn about the disability

This book is wonderful and simple. The book's brief page length makes it suitable for young readers. If you can't put your phone down after reading this narrative, you might finish it in one sitting.

I know how difficult and hard-breaking it is for some parents to see that their child is disabled and bullied, and I loved Donny's spirit in not letting his disability define him.
