Mr. and Mrs. Miller, the parents of Donny and Mary Grace, were sent to Kenya for missionary work by the church that Mr. Miller served. This new development was difficult for Mary Grace to accept, and she was quite upset about it. On the other hand, Donny seemed excited because it meant they would be visiting their grandparents, Grandma Cathy and Pa Steve, in California. However, only time would tell if their stay in California would be worth it. They would leave behind all their friends, and it appeared that Donny, being a child with special needs, might find it challenging to adapt and fit in. Mary Grace was determined to do everything she could to look out for her brother. Discover more about their stay in California in Catherine A. Pepe's book, Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures.

First and foremost, the book excels in its ability to educate readers about children with special needs. Donny, a key character in the story, has Down syndrome. The love and care he receives from his family, teachers, and even strangers is truly admirable. This book emphasizes the importance of empathy and treating individuals with special needs with kindness, regardless of their conditions. It sheds light on the challenges they face, such as bullying, learning difficulties, and difficulties in navigating daily life. Additionally, it reveals the kindness and warmth that resides within them. Donny, for instance, is an incredibly endearing character.

I particularly enjoyed the overall plot of the book. The story is engaging and highly enjoyable to read. It was fascinating to witness how Mary Grace and Donny confronted the obstacles they encountered. My only suggestion for improvement would be for the author to create a simpler version of the book specifically aimed at younger children. The content may prove to be somewhat complex for younger readers, but it would be wonderful if they could also experience the book.

Apart from that minor point, I did not find anything to dislike. Therefore, I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars, as I cannot think of any reason substantial enough to rate it any lower. While the book is suitable for a general audience, it particularly appeals to teenagers who enjoy reading captivating novels. The book has no errors or typos.
