What would you do if you had to leave everything and move somewhere new? Would you pack happily or be sad about your friends? That is exactly what happened to Donny and Mary Grace when their parents told them they had to leave Wichita and go with their grandparents to California. The Millers are a wonderful and loving family, but life is inevitably going to change after Mr. and Mrs. Miller are told they need to do missionary work in Kenya.

Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe is a children’s book about the unconditional love family has, and the journeys we have growing up.

I love the portrayal of the family. Donny and Mary Grace reminded me of real children I have in my family, innocent, full of emotions, and adorable. Mary Grace grows so much as a person and helps the reader learn valuable lessons as the book progresses, she makes new friends and lives many adventures in California. What I loved the most, is that she never stopped being and acting like a child, even if she was going through hard moments. I also loved reading about the family dynamic, the bond the Millers have is great, based on love and I am sure the family would survive anything and everything.

The only negative I have to say is that the book has no illustrations. As a ten-year-old, I would have enjoyed seeing the penguins, California, the Grandma Gang, and so much more… instead, we only got some black and white drawings at the end of specific chapters. The book would be such a delight with some vivid illustrations, it is unfortunate not to have them.

Overall, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. Even without the bonus of illustrations, the book is amazing and adorable. Children will learn so much from this book, about family, life, changes, and friendship. The book has also been professionally edited, as I did not find errors.

I recommend this book to children 10 and up, and their parents, or children that are about to go through hard changes, like moving to a new city.
