Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures (The Grandma Gang Mysteries) is a delightful story about a ten-year-old girl, Mary Grace, and her five-year-old brother Donny who visit with their grandparents, in California, for two years. This sudden, extended, visit occurs because Donny and Mary Grace’s parents undertake a missionary project in Africa. Mary Grace is unhappy about such a long separation from her parents and friends, while Donny, who has Down syndrome, is keen to spend time on his grandparent’s farm, ride horses and play with the dogs, Toby and Krug. Mary Grace and Donny soon adjust to living with their grandparents and settle into the routine of their new school. Mary Grace and Donny meet with their great-grandmother and two larger-than-life friends who make up The Grandma Gang. The children face serious challenges at school and Mary Grace enlists the help of The Grandma Gang to overcome the issues.

I am impressed with Mary Grace’s wisdom, well beyond that of a ten-year-old. Mary Grace, an inspiring character, thinks through problems and finds solutions that are surprisingly astute. Donny’s simple view of life is endearing, I love his enthusiastic approach to life and the enjoyment he derives from his marble collection. Mary Grace’s selfless love and support for Donny are admirable and a shining example for everyone. I enjoyed reading this wonderful account of two adorable, well-raised children and their escapades.

The author, Catherine Anna Pepe, deals masterfully with the importance of accepting differences in others and managing the torment of bullying.

In my view, there is nothing not to like about this book. I recommend Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures for all children who are accomplished, readers. For parents and grandparents, this is a beautiful story to read, at bedtime or otherwise, for children unable to read it for themselves. Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures (The Grandma Mysteries) merits a rating of five out of five.
