The book is a children's book portraying the life of 5-year-old Donny with Down syndrome and his family. Mary Grace, Donny’s sister, is as compassionate and understanding as she could get with her brother. The two live with their parents in Kansas, a state they grew to love at a tender age. Their father, Mr. Miller, is a priest, while their mother is an engineer. With time, due to their careers, they have to travel to Africa, leaving their children with their grandparents, who live in California. This departure is difficult and painful for all family members except Donny, who is always full of excitement. Mary Grace has a hard time adapting to this change in her life. However, Mary Grace later grows to enjoy California as much as Donny does.

Moreover, I enjoyed reading this book, especially where Donny enlightens everyone's mood in sad moments. The author's perspective on exhibiting Down syndrome is supportive and informative. For instance, Mr. and Mrs. Miller explain to Mary Grace Donny’s condition. As family, the Millers help Donny in any way they can. They are patient with him. Also, at school in California, Donny attends classes that are adapted specifically for children with conditions similar to his. Donny’s friend, Ed, who also has Down syndrome, seems to give comfort to Donny, as they both love marbles. I also liked Mary Grace's intuition; her reasoning and logic kept me wondering about her age.

As such, I rate Donny and Mary Grace's California adventures 5 out of 5. The book is written flawlessly, with no grammar mistakes or profanity. The author used an engaging style of writing, such as employing some graphic art in between chapters. The book is best enjoyed by adolescents. The diction is understandable, although it includes some uncommonly used words.
