Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
The story is about Mary Grace and her brother Donny, who live with their parents in Wichita. The father is a priest, and the mother is a civil engineer. The church decides to send them to Africa as missionaries for the Episcopal church there and to help get clean water for rural villages. However, they can't take the kids with them, so they decide to send them to live with their grandparents in California. Mary Grace is very disappointed at first. But with time, she gets used to living there. However, something happens at school that makes her reconsider her decision. Yet she decides to face the situation and solve the issue.
The book A Grandma Gang Mystery: Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures, Volume 1 by Catherine Anne Pepe is a story about the author and her little brother, who suffers from Down syndrome. Donny's character was very sweet and cheerful. He made the book very sentimental and touching. The story touches on a social issue that most countries suffer from: "bullying." Mary Grace is depicted as quite a smart and brave little girl who joins forces with a group of older women who solve mysteries to figure out who is bullying her and her little brother.
There wasn't much that I didn't like about the book. The storyline was interesting, and the author managed to start the book in a simple yet captivating way with that trip to the zoo. There was also the case of influence; the author focused on how far the kids can go mimicking their parents and how much they are influenced by their parent's behavior toward them or others, as in the case of Jason, who had a negative influence, and Mary Grace, who had a positive influence.
I would rate this book 5 out of 5. The editing was exceptionally well done; I didn't find any grammatical or spelling mistakes. The characters were very well built, and each displayed a certain quality that would teach the kids reading the book a certain lesson. Even though the illustrations were only a few and were in black and white, they helped emphasize the feelings of the characters, which was very clever.
I would recommend this book to young readers who could have the same social problems at their schools or to those whose parents want to teach them about the dangers of this kind of behavior. Especially since there are special-needs children involved in the story.
