Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures, written by Catherine Anna Pepe, is the first book in the Grandma Gang Mystery series. It is a children's book that portrays the depth of bonding in families.
Donny and his elder sister, Mary Grace, were happily living with their parents. That was when they decided to leave for Africa, leaving Donny and Mary Grace with their grandparents. Donny didn't understand what it meant, but the news made Mary Grace extremely sad. Two years in California without their parents seemed like too much time. But the story about the Grandma Gang made her curious to know how her grandmother belonged to the gang that solved the mystery behind a theft. Moving to a new place meant new problems, and Mary Grace was more than ready to join the Grandma Gang to solve the mystery. What will Donny and Mary Grace face in California, and how will they overcome it?
The book has a lot of positive aspects. One of the main characters, Donny, is portrayed as a child with Down syndrome. The author was able to portray this character with sincerity and gave him as much space as Mary Grace in the story. As the author took inspiration from her brother, the story felt realistic. Donny's enthusiasm and his innocence made me a fan of the character. By portraying Donny, the author was able to break the stigma related to the syndrome.
As this is the first book in the series, the story focused on introducing each character of the Grandma Gang. Also, the other characters were given considerable space. This was essential to the story, as there were a lot of characters. The book deals with topics like bullying, and I was glad to see the issue properly treated in the story. As this is a children's book, it teaches them to be responsible for their actions. The story takes this issue very seriously, and the characters can be seen showing why bullying is bad.
I couldn't find any negative points to be discussed in the story. This book was professionally edited with very few errors. I give this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars. I did not reduce any stars, as the book had very few errors, and that wasn't enough to hinder my reading experience.
I highly recommend this book, especially to those who have children. This is a great children's book that talks about topics like Down syndrome and bullying. This book can help young readers understand these topics better. Also, parents will be able to learn the best way to treat bullying from this book.
