Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures, by Catherine A. Pepe, is a sweet novel that follows Donny and Mary Grace Miller as they embark on a two-year separation from their parents, who go on a mission to Africa. When Mary Grace and Donny move to California to live with their grandparents, they face integrating into a new school. For Donny, who has Down’s syndrome, the transition is easy. He accepts change with a smile on his face, but Mary Grace struggles socially. Some classmates bully her. How does she navigate this bumpy road?

This book is a great read with several themes that are relevant to children today. Inclusion, bullying, and changes in families are common among kids. Youngsters will be able to relate to the adventures of the pair. The language is clear and direct. Pepe paints a clear picture of both Donny and Mary Grace in their actions and responses to situations. Donny is so lovable! The author moves the story along without superfluous descriptions. Children will find the book engaging and will ask to read the sequels.

As an early chapter book, Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures is delightful. The zoo and penguin chapters, while cute, are not necessary to the main story; however, I think that children will enjoy them. There are no other suggestions to improve this book.

I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. It is an easy novel for school-aged children. It is well edited. The story stimulates discussions about extending grace to others, why kids may bully, the inclusion of special needs children, and different types of families.

Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures, by Catherine A. Pepe, is a great book suitable for elementary-aged children. As a teacher or a parent, I see so many teachable moments that will arise when reading this book to or with young children. The story does involve a father who is a Christian minister, so it may be more geared towards religious readers, although there are no overt Bible references. There are lessons to be learned for all.
