Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures is an amazing read that’s filled with plenty of heartfelt emotions and is sure to tug at the heartstrings of anyone who reads this incredible book.
The opening scene where Donny is lost at the zoo does stir you up a bit, but the chapter eventually comes to a fulfilling end, leading up to the rest of the chapters and various thrilling storylines.
The overall plot was easy to follow and had fantastic twists and turns leaving you paging through as fast as you can to solve the recurring mysteries in the book.
The only criticism I have is about the multiple conversations the characters had surrounding the Africa move, which also happens to be the first turning point of the book.
It was beautifully written, but also had the most mistakes in the entire book. Firstly, the scenes were all jumbled up, in that they didn’t flow as naturally in the book as they did in chapter one.
Secondly, I found the mention of the pastor and his husband a bit offensive because homosexuality is highly frowned upon in the church. And it felt wrong to associate one with the other. There’s nothing wrong with teaching children about homosexuality, but it shouldn’t be at the expense of undermining other people’s beliefs, especially about religion.
I can’t fault that too much since this is the only time it was mentioned in the entire book.
Another mistake I saw was that Donny was part of the second Africa conversation, because there was a scene where he interjected during the conversation, but then when the scene changed, it appeared as though Donny had been in Mary Grace’s room the entire time, which frazzled me a bit.
There’s also the small mention of Donny’s name also being spelled as “Donnie” during those Africa conversations.
Another fault would be the page numbers. Some page numbers are repeated, from page 88, 89, 90, moving up. It’s not a big error, but it does seem a bit misleading, especially when you’re trying to track your progress.
But the book is an enjoyable read regardless and the numbering doesn’t affect the overall effect of the storylines. I would rate this book a solid 4/5. It’s an incredible book and the personal touches were greatly received.
I would have loved for Dave to also be a character in the book, since all the other siblings had roles, but maybe I’ll see him in one of the other titles!
