Mary Grace has a little brother named Donny. He has Downs Syndrome. Their parents go on a mission to Africa. The two children move from Kansas to their grandparent’s home in California. Mary Grace struggles with the move and her parent’s leaving. Mary Grace starts to make friends at her new school. Then, threatening notes start being placed on her desk. The notes target Mary Grace, her brother, and her best friend. Mary Grace works with her grandmother and a group of mystery-solving elderly friends, to solve the bullying and protect everyone.

Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures is written by Catherine A. Pepe. It is very well-written and entertaining. The book covers difficult topics, including mental disabilities, with tact and grace. It is written simply, in a way that will appeal to young readers. It has good morals, which are told truthfully and not in a condescending way. The main characters make mistakes like all children will. Emphasis is placed on how to make amends and take responsibility for your actions.

I did not note any negative aspects of the book. It is exceptionally well-edited. I identified no errors. The novel is age appropriate for younger readers. The language used and topics covered are all relevant to the audience.

I rate this book five out of five stars for being an excellent children’s novel. It was entertaining, with funny side stories easing the serious topics. I especially liked how Mary Grace's classmates made serious behavioral mistakes and had to deal with associated consequences.

I recommend this book for children aged seven and up due to its length and lack of illustrations. This short chapter book has many good lessons about tolerance, inclusion, and standing up for yourself. I recommend this novel to all young readers, as it contains many good lessons to learn.
