Review of Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula
R.F. Kristi's series, Inca Cat Detective, follows the adventures of Inca, a Siberian kitty, and her family as they journey to South Korea. During their travels, they meet a guide named Ye-Jun and his dog, Baram. They soon discover that Ye-Jun's sister, Bo-Mi, has gone missing. Inca and her companions embark on a mission to reunite Ye-Jun with his estranged sister Ji and protect their mom's cheese from a covetous rival.
The cats willingly offer their assistance to help Ye-Jun locate his missing sister and the dog that ventured into North Korea but never returned. Their quest to cross the border fence and bring Ji and Bo-Mi back to South Korea unfolds as a thrilling adventure. Amidst a demilitarized zone peacebuilding competition called the patisserie, which aims to foster harmony between North and South Korea, the cats organize a rescue operation.
This children's book features diary entries presented in a fun font and is complemented by numerous illustrations. The plot, while simple, captivates readers with its heartwarming innocence. The feline friends are endearing, and the fact that they are detective pets adds an extra layer of charm. Upon their arrival at the South Korean airport, the cats meet Ye-Jun, who graciously offers them lodging in his house. Terrance, one of the cats, develops an affectionate bond with Baram, Ye-Jun's dog.
The author's writing style, accompanied by eye-catching illustrations, vividly portrays the adventures of Inca and Ye-Jun. Along the way, they learn a bit of Korean and encounter a competitive sister who wishes to join them and their feline companions. Inca and her friends must strategize to reunite the siblings and their pets without jeopardizing the peace conference.
Based on my reading experience, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. As an avid fan of cats, dogs, and mysteries, I thoroughly enjoyed delving into a story where pets take center stage as detectives. The descriptions of cherry blossoms, the colorful illustrations featuring adorable pets with expressive eyes, and the delightful expressions of the cats all contributed to my enjoyment. I particularly appreciated the humorous moments at the airport involving Missy's famous cheese and Enzo. Furthermore, the book exhibited professional editing, as I only came across a few errors while reading, which was the only drawback or dislike I could find.
I highly recommend this book to children who relish solving mysteries while having fun. It is a perfect choice for those who appreciate stories about friendship and Korean culture, especially those who adore pets. Cat Detectives in the Korean Peninsula is suitable for a wide audience, including parents seeking an engaging tale to read to their children and young adults who have a passion for animals and mysteries.
