Having a child or a sibling with special needs requires a lot of patience, love, care, and understanding. Ensuring they are protected from the negativity of the world is a difficult task. In Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures, Catherine A. Pepe narrates how the Miller family cares for him to the best of their ability.

It was an amazing summer for the Miller family, although there were a few mishaps. But those things happen, right? When Mary Grace and Donny's parents told them the big news that they were going to Africa and couldn't take the children with them, Mary Grace didn't take the news well. The children have to move to California, where they will stay with their grandparents. We see the challenges they face and learn how they overcome them. How do the children adjust to a new environment? Read to find out.

A major theme in the book is understanding. When we fail to understand that all children, regardless of whether they need special care, are people like us with emotions, feelings, and personalities of their own, we end up hurting them and others who care for them.

I love how Donny's family loves and cares for him. They were never ashamed of him; they stood up for him, helped him understand the world around him to the best of their ability, and ensured he understood enough to live a regular life.

For the reasons stated above, I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. I found the plot to be simple and engaging. The writing style was simple, and the words used were not too complex for children but challenging enough to help them improve their vocabulary. There was nothing to dislike, and I found no errors, which shows that this book was exceptionally edited.

I recommend this book to children between the ages of 6 and 12. They can learn a lot about morality, understanding, the right way to treat others, and that there are consequences for every action.
