Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe is a children’s adventure book. The book follows the story of two siblings, Donny and Mary Grace, who move to California after their parents are sent on a mission in Africa. Mary Grace feels sad about leaving Wichita, but Donny is outgoing and looks forward to enjoying his stay in California. Interestingly, Donny thinks every day is the best day of his life. Once in California, Mary Grace gets bullied and involves the Grandma Gang in solving the mystery.

The children’s book is captivating and engaging for young readers. The storyline pace is relatively fast, which makes it more interesting as it makes the reader wonder, will Mary Grace adapt and be happy with the new environment? Will children in North Elementary School be friendly to Donny, who has Down Syndrome? How will the teachers deal with the bully? What new adventures will Donny and Mary Grace undertake during their stay in California? The book makes the reader more curious about what will unfold in the next scene.

The vocabulary and language are appropriate for the intended audience. The author uses a simple wring style which makes it easy to understand. Furthermore, the book is educative with family, love, friendship, and support themes. Children can learn lessons such as helping people with disabilities and how to deal with bullying. The book improves imaginative and creative thinking. The scene I enjoyed most was where Mary Grace works with Grandma Gang to solve the mystery bully.

I will give Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because it’s informative and was professionally edited. The book is not only a story but also life-changing, especially for young readers. I didn’t find any flaws in the book. The book is a good read!
