Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
Catherine A. Pepe wrote about the adventures of a little girl called Mary Grace in Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures. She was a bright little girl who knew how to solve problems. The first time she uses her problem-solving skills in the story is when Donny, her little brother, goes missing at the zoo. Mary Grace and Donny loved the zoo. But they loved their parents more, and their family was beautiful beyond comparison. Things took a bad turn when her parents got the news that their church and the World Health Organization had posted them to a country in Africa. They would be gone for two years, and Mary Grace felt like her world was crumbling. Will she ever forgive her parents for leaving them to go to Africa? In what other way will she put her problem-solving skills to good use in the story?
Mary Grace's love for her brother is my favorite thing in the story. She was always there for him, even though he was at least five years younger than her. Not all siblings know how to love their younger ones, especially ones with special needs, like Donny. Donny had Down syndrome, and Mary Grace never treated her brother unkindly. Donny, in turn, adored her and loved her more than words can say. Their relationship made me cry, and I fell in love with that.
I expected to see many pictures in the story since it is a children's book. Sadly, there were hardly any. I was disappointed and wondered why Catherine A. Pepe refused to put pictures in it. I wanted to see Donny's smile, Mary Grace's eyes, and Lucky, a penguin they loved. Sadly, I was never given a chance to, and I liked this the least about this book. That was the only negative aspect it had.
Catherine A. Pepe edited the book flawlessly. There were no errors or dull moments in the story. I liked the plot because it was interesting. Even though I disliked the fact that pictures were hardly added, I do not think that is a good reason to subtract any significant points from the book's rating. I still enjoyed reading it without those pictures. So, since I have no good reason to give Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures a lower rating, I have decided to rate it 5 out of 5 stars.
I recommend Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures to you if you like books about siblings' unconditional love for each other. It should also be read by youngsters aged seven to eleven because the book was written for them in the first place. Apart from that, it will teach them important lessons on sharing, love, and bullying.
