Review of Zest

[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Zest" by Ms. Willden.]
Jazz has twin older sisters and twin younger brothers. She was in the middle and was far different from them. They are regular, but she is not. Sadly, being different and so in the middle of everything, her family even forgot her birthday. It made her so sad and disappointed. But her family makes up for it. They decorated her 9th birthday party and invited her cousins. But instead of being happy, seeing them made her feel worse, and she even felt she didn’t belong. So, when she blows her cake, she wishes she was special. At that exact moment, someone appeared and changed Jazz’s life. I’m certain that children will enjoy the journey of Jazz in the book Zest by Ms. Willden.
There are so many things to praise about this book. First, I like the book’s magical features. It has bold words on some occasions that lead you to the glossary page when clicked. The book contains tiny illustrations to explain the underlined words. This way, children have easy access to learning extra words and understanding the story.
Aside from those lovely features, the author created some specific words for this storyline, which was amazing. The good thing about it is that the author presented it easily. Willden’s narration was indeed very descriptive, and readers can imagine right away the scenes, characters, places, and things. My favorite scene was when Jazz received her zest and opened her eyes to a world full of magic.
I love how the author poured moral lessons into the story, such as belonging, compassion, friendship, and love. In the story, my favorite character was not Jazz but Uncle Les, who helped her realize the beauty within herself. The author taught us to appreciate our surroundings. She instills in the readers’ minds the desire to be compassionate toward others and make a difference. She also reminds us that the world needs more laughter and that our choices affect our lives.
I love the book, and I have nothing negative to say about it. The editors deserve applause for the book’s flawless editing. I admire the author more when I know that she also makes cute illustrations for this book. The images of fairies, clingers, and characters are pleasing to the eyes. Overall, the book got a magic 5 out of 5 stars from me because of its complete beauty. The appreciative discussions above were evidence for its highest rating. I recommend this reader-friendly book to all children who love magic and fantasy.
