Review of Maestro Orpheus and The World Clock
Mystery, music, and compassion find their place in Maestro Orpheus and the World Clock. The book tells the story of a ten-year-old boy, Frederick, who complains about going to stay with his grandfather, a clock repairer, whenever his parents are absent. Surprisingly, Frederick used to love going to visit his grandfather. However, he began to hate clocks and the sight of clocks.
One night, Frederick lay on his bed in his grandfather's house, staring at the ceiling. When it is almost 12, the clock begins to chime, and Frederick also begins to count to 12. Strangely, the chiming stops before Frederick counts to 12, and the clock stops. Leaving his room, he noticed that all the clocks had stopped at the same time. In his quest to discover what was wrong and tell his grandfather what was happening, he meets Maestro Orpheus, who takes him on an adventure that changes his perception of clocks and time. Who is Maestro Orpheus? What adventures lie ahead for Frederick? Do we get to understand Frederick's reason for hating clocks?
The writers, Robert Pennee and Joanne Grodzinski, and the narrators, R.H. Thomson, Marshall Matson, Leslie Marshall, Scott Thomas, and B.J. McLellan, truly deserve their flowers. While the authors should be commended for the amazing storyline, the narration and the music brought the audiobook to life. I can say that this is one of the best audiobooks I have listened to. The book had an adequate amount of suspense for a book of its calibre. It is an educational read, as children will learn about several musical instruments and their features; they will also learn about the importance of time and come to agree that memories can be preserved.
The music in the book was the best part of the book. The authors tried to show a correlation between music and time, and several musical recordings were used throughout the book. This will appeal to lovers of music, and children will find the songs relaxing. The audiobook was narrated properly, as various sounds ranging from the sound of clocks, opening doors, and so on were used. Instead of simply narrating the events, actual sounds were used. Different voices were used for the characters, and it truly felt as though I was seeing a movie. The imagery created was fascinating. The lessons passed on through the short stories in the book were amazing too.
The audiobook was perfect; I found nothing to dislike about it. I did not hear any errors while listening to the book, and I was glued the book. For these reasons, I rate the book five out of five. There was no reason to deduct any stars from my rating. Music lovers will appreciate this, and children will find the audiobook fascinating.
