Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
Donny and his sister, Mary Grace, lived with their parents in Kansas. Donny was born with Down Syndrome. The church that they attended selected Donny's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Miller, to go on a missionary trip to Africa. With this new information, Donny and Mary Grace had to stay with their grandparents in California. As expected, the new change came with its challenges, as Mary Grace was bullied at her new school. Mary Grace then teamed up with her grandmother and another group of grannies to try to discover who the bully was. Her love for puzzles and solving mysteries is being put to the test. Can she figure out who this bully is?
Mary Grace is the character that I loved the most in this book. She was a smart young girl but did not allow this to get to her head, as she never hesitated to show kindness and empathy. I loved how she handled the case of the bullies. She ensured that they were not shamed, and I loved this about her. Donny was lovely to read about. He was a sweetheart and always brought a positive energy that was infectious.
This book contained a lot of morals for children to learn. Mary Grace showed a lifestyle that is worthy of emulation by any child. This book also shows that one should not allow anything or any circumstance to kill their joy. I also enjoyed the humor in this book, and I must say that Donny is truly a likeable character.
The only thing I didn’t like about this book was the length. Children are known to have a short attention span, so I think it will be difficult to keep their attention for the whole of this book. However, this was not a problem for me, so I think this book deserves a full rating.
I rate Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe five out of five stars. The editing was impeccable, and I found no errors while reading this book. I recommend this book to children and children’s teachers. The teachers can read this book to them while teaching them good morals.
