Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine Anna Pepe is a story about two siblings and the unexpected turn their lives take. Donny has Down syndrome, but despite this, he strives to live life to the fullest. Mary Grace is Donny's older sister, who adores her brother and tries everything she can to keep him safe and happy. They both live in Wichita with their parents and love their hometown, but everything changes when they learn that their parents will be required to travel to Africa for the next two years, leaving Donny and Mary Grace to live with their grandparents in California. Mary Grace does not want to leave Wichita, but she cannot express her anguish in order to keep her brother happy, who is eager to see their grandparents. Everything seemed to be going well in California until Mary Grace discovered some strange letters on her school desk, bullying her and her younger brother.

From beginning to end, this book is a work of art. The bond between the siblings is one of my favourite aspects of this story. Mary Grace is quite mature for her age; she always thinks about the consequences of her actions before acting. Mary Grace always prioritises Donny's needs over her own and does everything she can to keep her brother happy. Donny is adored by his entire family and friends, despite his medical condition. His upbeat and lively personality draws people to him, and he never fails to make others smile. Each character in this book is distinct and briefly described, and the story progresses smoothly with each chapter.

There is not a single thing about this book that I did not like. The story was really captivating, which made it impossible for me to put the book down unfinished.

I couldn't find a single error in this, so I can say that this book is exceptionally well edited. I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars, as there is no reason for me to deduct any stars. This book was a delight to read, and I could not have asked for a better ending.

This book teaches the reader to always appreciate others, regardless of their medical condition. I would recommend this book to children aged 9 to 14. This book can also be read to your child who is younger than 9 years old as a bedtime story.
