Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe is a fascinating book. The novel speaks about a family with two kids. Mary Grace is ten years old, while Donny is five years old. Donny has Down Syndrome, and the whole family works to make him happy in all aspects. Their parents receive a request to serve as missionaries in Africa for two years, and this message is received differently by everyone. The parents think of their children, especially Donny. This missionary work forces them to send the kids to their grandparents in California. Mary Grace is not happy about this, but Donny is so eager to go there.
They start a new life in California, including joining a new school. After a few days, Mary Grace starts receiving strange, mysterious messages threatening her brother and her new friend. She goes ahead to inform her grandmother, who informs her teacher. The issue is handled in the best manner possible with the help of the school principal. Mary Grace made sure that this information did not reach Donny because she always wanted happiness for him. She later joined the Grandma Gang after she gave them the box idea, which was used to solve the problem they were facing.
I like the way the author used simple language in the book. This made me understand every activity in the book. The characters were well fleshed out in the book. I loved the way Mary Grace was so caring toward Donny. She always worked to make him happy. She was also able to forgive Tiffany and Justin after knowing that they were the ones sending her strange messages. This showed how forgiving and kindhearted she was. I was able to get a picture of the events in the book while reading it. I pictured how the magic box worked and how Donny and Mary Grace were dancing happily at the zoo. This kept me active until the end.
I disliked the way the author was slow in the beginning. The book was about California adventures, but the author spent a lot of time explaining how the message about missionary work was received. However, this does not affect my rating of the book. The author brought out the characters in the most effective way and made us understand the roles of each one of them. I was able to understand how Mary Grace was so kind and how her grandmother was intelligent in solving the problem facing them. The book was also easy to understand because of the simple language used. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars because of the positives stated above and the excellent editing it has.
I recommend this book to lovers of adventure. Those who like stories about family relationships will also love this book. The way Mary Grace's family took care of Donny was impressive. There is a lot to learn in the book about love and responsibility. This is a good book for children, as it helps them learn to be responsible at a young age, the way Mary Grace was.
