The story focuses on the lives of Donny, a boy with Down syndrome, and his sister, Mary Grace, and their adventures as they settle into a new life in California. Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures is the first book in the Grand Ma Gang Mysteries by Catherine A. Pepe. We follow their experiences and growth in the new environment in which they find themselves. The book touches on sensitive areas in our everyday lives and interactions. Having to adapt to various changes, caring for children with Down syndrome, and the menace of bullying among schoolchildren.

Donny and Mary Grace lived contentedly with their parents in Wichita, Kansas. Things took a different turn for the siblings as their parents informed them that they had to travel to Kenya, Africa, on humanitarian and missionary work for two years. Donny and Mary Grace would stay with their grandparents in California, leaving their home in Wichita. It did not seem all bad to Donny, who was looking forward to seeing the dogs and his grandparents, but it was upsetting for Mary Grace because she did not want to be separated from her parents for that long. Also, she would lose her last year of elementary school, her friends, and all the other things she loved in Wichita.

Catherine A. Pepe did a great job telling the story perfectly from a child’s perspective. The narrative style is straightforward and easygoing yet compelling. Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures touched on many themes. The themes of bullying and child care stood out to me the most. Bullying in schools has become more prevalent among young children in recent years. I admired the strength and maturity Mary Grace displayed in handling the bullying. Mary Grace was a strong child who handled situations rationally despite disliking her parents' decision to travel. Donny’s happiness made me lighthearted. He was such a positive child, and I felt grateful for the love he got from everyone around him.

While I hoped to have seen more of the pencil drawings as that would have made the book more colorful and engaging for the kids. That did not hinder my enjoyment of the book. I disliked nothing about Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures. I liked everything about the book. I found no grammatical errors, proof that it was exceptionally well edited. I rate it a well-deserved 5 out of 5 stars. It was nothing short of lovely.

This may be a children’s book, but it is well-suited for all adults. It teaches so many lessons. I highly recommend it to everyone interested in a quality, worthwhile read.
