Behind the Attic Wall by Sylvia Cassidy

I read this book when I was a kid. Still have it, along with The Secret Garden, The Little Princess, and Black Beauty. Does anyone else remember this book? I remember thinking it was a weird book for kids and I always felt like I was missing something. What were your thoughts on this book? Was there more to the story, or was it pretty cut and dry?
