Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
The two main characters in this book are Donny and Mary Grace. Young Mary Grace is intelligent and enjoys delving into mysteries. Donny, a child with Down syndrome, is the sweetest and adores marbles.
The two children react differently to the news that their parents are moving to Africa for two years. Donny was ecstatic, while Mary Grace was not at all happy. They were moving to California to live with their grandmother, Papa Steve, and Krug (the dog), and Donny was excited about that. Mary Grace was sure that going to California would be no good for her. Her intuition becomes real when she gets bullied by a mysterious person. Read Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures by Catherine A. Pepe to learn who the enigmatic bully is and whether Mary Grace will be able to solve the mystery and enjoy the sweet and amazing tale of these two kids in California.
There are 17 interesting ongoing chapters in this 182-page book. The narrative is written from the perspective of a third person. The audience was tense at the beginning of the book, but it made them happy at various points. The book ends on a happy note, just as it began. You'll smile after reading the fantastic ending. The book has a remarkable structure, and the storylines are amazing. Between each chapter is an incredible sketch that relates to the subject of the following chapter.
I greatly appreciate how the author didn't make the book entirely about bullying and stuck with the theme and title of the book through to the very end. It's a page-turner with a suspenseful ending. Character development has been masterfully executed by the author. I appreciate the author's decision to avoid the repetition of scenes and lines to make the piece more interesting. The book is straightforward in language, making it easy for kids to read.
I admire how Donny's persona taught us to appreciate each moment of life and look for the good in every circumstance. He reminded me that it is up to us to control our happiness and how we deal with the world around us. I find it amusing that the author got the idea for some characters and events from living with the real Donny and the rest of his family.
It would be my pleasure to rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. There are no grammatical errors and it is exceptionally well-edited. I don't dislike anything. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book, and I'm confident that kids and young adults will too.
Anyone interested in learning more about bullying and how it affects its victims should read this book. This book will pique the interest of anyone who enjoys solving mysteries or being adventurous.
