[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "My son the Pizza" by Kevin B Ploth Greg DiFranco.]
It is very important that fathers, in addition to mothers, bond with their children through various fun activities. Through frequent interactions and socializing with children, various hobbies and interests can be developed in children from an early age. My Son the Pizza by Kevin B. Ploth is a children's short story that shows the companionship between father and son through pizza making.
This book is relatively short and has an informal format. The story follows a father and son spending time together in the kitchen making pizza. Making pizza is one of the boy's favourite activities that he always looks forward to. The entire pizza-making process is described in the book, while individual steps are also illustrated by Greg DiFranco. In addition, the book also includes photos of the author and his son in moments of joy while making pizza, which gives the whole story an extra specialness and authenticity.
What I like most about this short story is its uniqueness and silliness. The story is so fun and optimistic that I had a smile on my face the whole time. The author also underlines a vital message to the readers, which is to spend as much time as possible with their children. They will grow up quickly, while their parents will later regret the missed opportunities and unused time. At the end of the story, there is also an actual pizza recipe, which is an added plus. Furthermore, the photos in the book show the genuine joy and happiness of a little boy making pizza with his dad, which is adorable.
On the other hand, I would have liked the story to have been formatted differently, especially the text. The author did not pay attention to punctuation marks and some grammatical rules. For example, direct speech is not marked with punctuation marks. In addition, some parts are unnecessarily separated with ellipsis. Similarly, the font seems too large, and I feel that more text could have fit on one page.
All things considered, I would give this book 3 out of 5 stars. I like the idea, but the execution is not the best. I think the author should have paid more attention to the visual aspect of the book and its layout. Also, I encountered some errors.
I would primarily recommend the book to parents of toddlers. It would be ideal to read it with them and thus motivate them to do some activities together, like making pizza, such as the example in this book.
