Catherine A. Pepe's Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure is a captivating tale of family and unravelling mysteries. The book follows the journey of siblings Mary Grace and Donny Miller, who face challenges when they move to California. Mary Grace, a 10-year-old, and her 5-year-old brother Donny, who has Down syndrome, are forced to leave their parents due to a humanitarian assignment in Africa.

The children relocated to California to live with their grandparents, Grandma Cathy and Papa Steve. While Donny is thrilled, Mary Grace initially feels their lives have worsened. In their new school, Mary Grace becomes the target of anonymous bullying, sparking her determination to uncover the culprits. Assisted by the "Grandma gang," she exposes the wrongdoers and helps them change. Ultimately, Mary Grace embraces her luck in California.

The reason I love this book is because of the profound impact of Donny's positive attitude and enthusiastic behaviour. His ability to spread joy through his smiles and warm hugs, despite his condition, is truly heartwarming. The unwavering love and priority that his sister, Mary Grace, gives him, as well as the compassionate and non-judgmental approach of characters like Mrs. Stuart, Miss Hagens, and Mrs. Root towards the bullying incident, are all reasons that make me truly cherish this book. It's the way these elements come together that makes this book a source of inspiration and enjoyment for me.

While I don't outright dislike this book, my reservations stem from its portrayal of a near-perfect scenario. The storyline's attempt to address unlawful actions with love and concern feels somewhat idealized, and the depicted method of discipline might oversimplify the complexities of real-world situations. The book's focus on positive change and rehabilitation could potentially downplay the challenges and resistance often encountered when dealing with offenders. This overly optimistic perspective may limit its practicality, making it less relatable and applicable, particularly in more nuanced or challenging contexts. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to parents, educators, and people of every age bracket.

I gave this book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars primarily due to its captivating storyline and compelling characters. The author's remarkable ability to convey the power of positivity and affection through the narrative significantly enhances the book's impact, imparting valuable moral lessons to readers. Additionally, the book's exceptional editing, free of errors, contributes to its overall excellence, solidifying my high rating.
