Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
To introduce your child to a heartwarming tale of friendship and teach them about treating classmates with disabilities, I recommend getting a copy of "Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures" by Catherine Anna Pepe. As part of the A Grandma Gang Mystery series, the book follows Donny and Mary Grace, whose parents must go to Africa for church work, leading the children to stay with their grandparents in California. While Donny is excited about the change, Mary Grace is reluctant and worries about leaving her friends behind. The story delves into how the siblings adapt to their new life and meet new friends.
Catherine Anna Pepe effectively addresses social issues children face at school, shedding light on disabilities with a hopeful approach. The book adopts a gentle tone even when discussing the intolerance of bullying, seeking to understand the underlying reasons behind such behavior. The Grandma Gang characters, with their diverse backgrounds and passion for solving mysteries, add depth to the story, providing solutions to the characters' challenges.
Though the book has strengths, some readers may find it lacking in portraying children as perfectly behaved, missing opportunities to showcase more realistic moments of misbehavior or sibling disagreements. Additionally, more illustrations could enhance the book's appeal to younger readers.
Overall, the book is well edited, earning a commendable 5 out of 5 stars. It is suitable for children up to 12 years old, but younger children may benefit from having it read to them. Parents will appreciate the book's moral lessons.
As the first installment in the series, "Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures" offers a heartwarming and instructive read, with the other books in the series covering various topics and being accessible to read in any order. This book is exceptionally well edited, and I didn't find any reason to dislike it.
