I’ve longed to have a light-hearted read filled with fun and mystery. Catherine A. Pepe’s Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures provided the exact satisfaction.

The story starts with Mary Grace’ and Donny enjoying their vacation. Out of nowhere, their parents, the Millers, inform their kids that they must leave for missionary work in Africa. The worst part is they can’t take Donny and Mary Grace with them. Mary Grace is devastated. Now she has to live with their Grandparents in California.

On the other hand, Donny is excited about this new venture to meet his friend, Ed. Grandma Cathy and Papa Steve take the kids home from the airport, and the adventure begins. Donny and Mary Grace are enrolled in a new North Elementary School. Donny loves his special class, while Mary Grace isn’t happy with her class.

One day, Mary Grace finds envelopes under her desk. When she reads it, she is shocked. Someone is bullying her. Teachers Stuart, Hagen, and Root of the North Elementary School want to find the person behind all this. But they don’t want to ruin the reputation of the school. What do they do? How do they solve it? That is for you to find out.

I enjoyed reading the book from the first to the last. The light-hearted moments like visiting the zoo, playing with marbles, visiting Lucky the penguin, fishing, Donny’s Green Eggs and Ham, and more made me smile like a child. It made me wish for a childhood similar to Donny and Mary Grace. I liked the author’s constant style of adding new scenes.

I don’t think I can say anything negative about this book. Catherine A. Pepe did an amazing job crafting Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures. The story was smoothly flowing. It made me keep reading till the end. The author’s strong concept of confronting bullying was noteworthy. Kids get bullied at school, and only a small percentage are known outside. The rest is hidden between the walls. This book is an eye-opener for kids to stand up for themselves when bullied.

I would rate this book 5 out of 5 stars. There is no reason to reduce a star as everything about the book was beautiful. I did not come across any profanity throughout the book. Also, there were no errors in the book, so this book was professionally edited.

Children will love Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures so much. This will be a great birthday present for school-going kids. Even teens and young adults will enjoy the light humor in the book. Why don’t grandparents make this into a bedtime story for your grandkids? They will enjoy it and ask for more.

Let’s see if you qualify to be a part of the Grandma Gang!
