Toni the Superhero is a very cute and easy-to-read book! I enjoyed reading this book to my children and they enjoyed listening! The book is written using predictable and repetitive text, stating, "Toni likes to...," at the beginning of each sentence. The illustrations help young readers to predict the action word that is at the end of each sentence. Not only do the illustrations help to predict the text, but the pictures are also detailed and vibrant using a lot of bright colors! One thing that I appreciate a lot is the fact that the main character, Toni, is a character of color. On a couple of different pages, he appears to play with children of all different races and genders! It teaches my African American children that anybody can be a superhero, even them! Another thing that I like is that Toni is a superhero who still enjoys doing regular everyday things. I think it is a fantastic message to send to kids that even superheroes eat healthy, play with friends, read, and help their families clean up around the house! Toni the Superhero is an amazing book to help teach the beginning skills of reading and to also instill a sense of pride and humility in children.
