Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
Change, no matter how good and relevant, is very difficult to embrace. That was certainly the case for 10-year-old Mary Grace in Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventure, written by Catherine Anna Pepe. This exciting children's book describes the lives of the Millers and their two children, Donny and Mary Grace, and depicts the tight-knit relationship between the children, their exciting adventures, independence, and growth.
Donny's father, Mr. Miller, was sent on a missionary journey to Africa alongside his wife, Mrs. Miller, for two years. As a result, their 10-year-old and 5-year-old children, Mary Grace and Donny had to live with their grandparents in California. This change, however, did not sit well with Mary Grace, as she couldn't bear to leave her school and friends in Kansas. Consequently, she was resistant to change. Despite her disappointment and resistance, she tried to stay strong for her brother, Donny, who has Down syndrome. Upon their arrival in California, they were unprepared for the enthralling and unforgettable adventures that awaited them.
I loved every aspect of this book, starting with its characters, each of whom had and portrayed their very unique personalities, contributing to this amazing storyline. Some of them include Mary Grace, Donny, and Grandma Cathy. Mary Grace was my favorite character. I admired her intelligence and courage so much. The love she had for her brother Donny was more maternal than sisterly, and that made me love her even more. I must also commend the author, Catherine Pepe, for her exceptional writing style and the very detailed descriptions employed in this story, which made it impossible for me to put the book down until I finished reading it. The language and tone she used in this book were highly appropriate and made it easily understandable for the target audience.
Another aspect of this book I loved the most was that it emphasized the struggles, care, training, and upbringing of children with special needs, particularly those with Down syndrome. There was nothing to dislike about this book. Moreover, I did not encounter any errors while reading it, and I can confidently say that it was professionally edited. Based on the aforementioned likes, I would rate this book a perfect 5 out of 5 stars.
I highly recommend this book to readers of all ages, especially the younger audience, as I believe they will be able to learn about independence, courage, and personal growth. This book is also suitable to be read during family time and at bedtime.
