"Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures" is a truly special book that delves into the world of kids and their grandparents. Written by the talented Catherine Anna Pepe, the author's unique writing style is both easy to comprehend and captivating.

The heart of the story revolves around Mary Grace, a young girl, and her brother Donny, who has Down syndrome. When their parents embark on a mission to Africa, Mary Grace and Donny find themselves in the care of their grandparents, leading to a series of unforgettable experiences. I loved every moment described in the book, from Donny getting found in the zoo by her sister on his favourite tram ride to Mary handling her bullies in California. Out of all, my favourite was Grandma Gang, which consists of three elderly women, led by her grandmother, Cathy. Mary joins hands with them to solve the mysteries related to bullying.

The book beautifully illustrates the range of emotions that Mary Grace and Donny go through as they adapt to their new living situation. It sensitively portrays the positive and challenging aspects of their journey. Suitable for children of varying ages, the book provides insights into Mary Grace and Donny's perspectives, allowing readers who might be facing similar circumstances to connect with these relatable characters. The sensitive topics like bullying, carelessness, etc. were beautifully handled in this book.

Catherine Anna Pepe skillfully addresses the theme of grandparents taking on the role of primary carers. With wisdom, patience, and unwavering love, the grandparents show up for Mary Grace and Donny in remarkable ways. The interactions between the siblings and their grandparents are heartwarming, underscoring the importance of intergenerational bonds and the valuable life lessons that are passed down. This book just reminded me of my childhood memories. There was nothing I disliked about this book. I didn't find any negative aspects of this book, which is free of grammatical errors. I rate this book five out of five stars.

"Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures" isn't merely a heartwarming narrative; it's also a valuable resource for parents, teachers, and carers. The story serves as a tool to spark discussions about family dynamics, change, and resilience. It emphasises the crucial support extended families provide and demonstrates the strength of unity and love during challenging times.

In essence, "Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures" is a touching and thought-provoking book that delves into the lives of children living with their grandparents. Catherine Anna Pepe's masterful storytelling creates an immersive experience that celebrates the bonds between generations. This book is undoubtedly a must-read for both children and adults, promoting empathy, understanding, and an appreciation for the diverse family structures that enrich our society.
