The book was about Donny, a five-year-old boy with down syndrome, who had a very positive outlook on everything and readily saw everything as an adventure. Unlike his elder sister Mary Grace, who took things more seriously. Mary Grace, who was ten years old, was very empathetic and was always there for her brother. She was especially sad when her parents had to travel to Africa and she and her brother had to stay with their grandparents in California. She was worried as she would be separated from her parents and her friends and was especially worried about her brother.

As the book suggests, it was basically about the adventures they had in California, with the Grandma Gang. In addition to the struggles of coping in a new environment and a new school, Mary Grace was being bullied. Mary Grace, her brother Donny and the Grandma Gang had to solve the mystery of who was behind the bullying and also to help keep her, her brother, Donny and her good friend, Penelope, away from harm’s way.

I enjoyed reading the book. It was able to highlight some of the issues faced by children with different forms of disabilities. The cool Grandma Gang was a huge part of the excitement in this book. I undoubtedly liked the clear explanation of the forms of bullying, how they thoroughly investigated the mystery and the way it was carefully handled. It makes the story easier for the present-day child to relate to.

The book was well written as it incorporates different lessons into this story. Lessons about bullying, which is one of the most demanding issues faced in the world today, the kind and inspirational nature of Mary Grace, she showed us that sometimes, problems are solved by kindness and understanding. A major lesson about Donny, well, It just goes to show that there is an ability in every form of disability. It is basically a story about family, perspective, accountability and also about friendship.

Pepe mentioned that some parts of the book were inspired by the real-life experiences of her younger brother, Donny, who had Down syndrome. The main character, Donny, was used to show and raise awareness of Down syndrome. I believe this book was well edited and the author’s language was very simple and her style was easy. I would recommend it to children as it can help shape their personalities, to teachers, since they work with children with different disabilities and to parents as well.
