Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures by Catherine Anna Pepe is a captivating children’s book exploring the lives of Mary Grace and her enthusiastic brother Donny, who has Down syndrome. The story of the loving and caring young siblings starts in Wichita, showing a happy family that cares deeply for each other. However, the family is forced to deal with changes when the parents have to leave to do missionary work in Africa while Mary Grace and Donny are sent to live with their grandparents at their ranch in California.
Mary Grace is mostly sad about the move, especially since she will leave the many things she loves in Wichita. However, with his ever-happy and positive outlook on life, Donny finds the move a good one and cannot wait to take all his marble collection to California. While attending a new school in California, Mary Grace suffers at the hands of bullies, which spurs her displeasure with the transfer, but then she gets to explore her love for solving mysteries, and together with the “Grandma Gang” and amazing teachers, Mary Grace solves the bullying problem.
What I like most about the book is its amazing characters, plot, and non-complex writing. It is sweet to realize that Donny maintains a happy and positive attitude while living with Down syndrome, and the people around him ensure that the positivity does not diminish. It helps even more to have a loving and caring sister who wants nothing more than to ensure that Donny is happy. Mary Grace’s character portrays the best sister that anyone could ask for. The book also has an active storyline that I found to be very engaging, and the fun explored kept a smile on my face throughout the read.
What I dislike is that the book was long while it could have been made shorter. Catherine Anna Pepe dedicated so much time to Donny and Mary Grace’s life in Wichita that the actual adventure in California only started seven chapters down the line.
Still, I would give the book a rating of 5 out of 5 stars because it was an easy and enthralling read. The book was exceptionally edited, and I did not notice any grammatical mistakes or punctuation errors. I would recommend the book to middle-school graders, elementary school teachers who need to know about bullying and effective ways of dealing with it, and parents. The book also appeals to anyone who loves adventure and mystery, like me!
