[Following is an official OnlineBookClub.org review of "Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures" by Catherine Anna Pepe.]
“Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures” by Catherine Anna Pepe is a book that revolves around the story of Mary Grace and her little brother Donny who was born with Down Syndrome. Mary Grace has a lovely family which includes her mom, dad, her little brother Donny and herself. They all visiting the Zoo and spending their time with each other. They especially love Lucky the Penguin and the Penguin Dance that their family share together also the Penguin Ice-cream from the Zoo which Donny had taught the lady from the Zoo. Out of no where Mary Grace’s father Mr. Miller got a call that he has to visit Africa as Missionaries for the Episcopal Church. This news was devastating for Mary Grace and she was not very happy about her parents leaving her and Donny here. Her parents tell her that they would be happy to be with their Grandparents. Donny being the happiest child one could was happy to spend his time with his grandparents and their dogs but Mary Grace couldn’t think of being away from her parents and school friends. Her mother tries to tell her stories of her Grandmother and the Grandma Gang who were friends to one another and how she would really enjoy her time in California. Finally, the day comes when Donny and Mary Grace reach California and also join their new school. Donny really loves his new school, his teacher and friends but Mary Grace is finding it difficult to adjust to this new environment and also in making friends. Things were starting to feel better for Mary Grace when things start turning nasty where someone is trying to threat not only her and Donny but also her new friend. My Thoughts:
We live in a society where we are encountering people with different thoughts, behavior, culture, race and creed. Some are born perfectly fine and lead a normal healthy life but some are born with an extra piece of a chromosome which makes it challenging for them to do some things which normal people and are called to be born with a condition known as ‘Down Syndrome’. Some people are very understanding with regards to these children and some do find them problem. But what we really need to understand above all this is that we are all humans and should treat each and everyone equally and respectfully. The concept of inclusiveness should be introduced to our children from a very young age and we ourselves should also be very respectful and sensitive when including children with special needs. I really loved how the author has through this story showed us how sometimes we elders are also responsible to how our children behave and speak. Children are like sponges they observe and shook each and everything that is happening around them. Author has also handled a very sensitive topic of bullying through this story and told us how bullying in any form is not correct.
The characters are really sweet, loving and relatable. Mary Grace is a loving sister but also an understanding young girl, Donny with all the positivity that the world needs. Even after facing bullying in her new school she did not deter from the goodness within her. In fact, she helped each and everyone around her.
The language was simple and lucid. The story was a little slow at the beginning but later on it really picked up its pace which was perfect. The author has created the mystery throughout the book and the readers will surely try to find out who is the bully troubling our dear Mary Grace and her dear ones.
Overall, I really enjoyed reading this book and would surely recommend it to all.
