Harold, Violet, Hector and Bear by Sheila Derreberry is a book for children aged 5-9. It is a true story that describes a different time and the joy pets can bring.

Harold was a handsome young man and a sergeant in the United States Army who fell in love with Violet. He thought she was beautiful, and even though he had no money to speak of, he knew they would be married. After leaving the army, Harold took many odd jobs and eventually became a fine carpenter. After the couple got married, they welcomed the arrival of four children.

The family lived a simple, happy life in a small town. More value was in family time rather than material possessions. Neighbours cared for each other, and kids played outside until the evening. There were no cell phones or electronic games. Pleasure came from the great outdoors and a vivid imagination. A much-loved addition to this idyllic life was the family dogs. Harold would occasionally bring a puppy home. The two most memorable were Hector and Bear. Hector was a loyal, lovable, and obedient beagle, and Bear was a large, part Walker Hound who thought he was a lap dog.

I loved the nostalgia for a different time. This childhood holds happy memories that young readers will enjoy. Children will be intrigued to know that there was a time without modern technologies and playtime consisted of being outdoors with friends. I enjoyed the descriptions of snowball fights and sledging in the winter and happy, wholesome family values. The book will give young readers an impression of how times have changed and a reminder of what is truly important. The meeting of Harold and Violet is a tale of love and working towards your goals, another important message.

The illustrations in the book are vibrant and visually display the story. Every page of text has a drawing, perfect to stimulate the imagination. The artwork is colourful, charming, and fun, creating an appealing format for kids. The text is simple and engaging, spurring the reader to think about a different time.

The descriptions of the two dogs are great. The two dogs are different but equally lovable. The author adds humour to the stories with misadventures and explores the likes and dislikes of the canine characters. These parts teach how each dog is unique but thrives when it receives love and care. The book clearly shows why dogs are great companions.

I didn’t find any spelling or grammar errors. The book is exceptionally edited. I loved the story and the nostalgia for a different time. The descriptions of the dogs are brilliant, and the illustrations enhance the reading experience. I found nothing to dislike about the book, and I rate it 5 out of 5 stars.

Interesting and adorable story. I'd really like to read this book. It has the effect of transporting you back in time when there was no technology. Along with our siblings and dogs, we'll play and run outside. This novel is absolutely captivating. Thank you for the review.
