Review of Donny and Mary Grace's California Adventures
The book “Donny and Mary Grace’s California Adventures”, written by Catherine A. Pepe, highlights the extreme problem of bullying at schools, both for the bully and the victims. It is a successful combination of adventure, mystery, happiness, sadness, and the most important the way to tackle bullying for children. It strongly underlines that bullying is a crime, and the only way to cope with it is to find the people involved and treat them to take the responsibility for their misbehavior.
The author has an impressive and flawless editing and writing style to take the attention of children and lead them to read between the lines about the characters of the book. The effective and exciting starting point of the book raises curiosity to read it. One of the most important aspects of the book is the effective way to handle bullying. It can be considered a way of coping with the problem for children, parents, and educators. They go for the problem instead of ignoring it. However, the author questions the policy of schools, which have harsh and useless punishments to cope with bullying. The book encourages people to be problem solvers instead of taking revenge and causing another mistake.
Another focus of the book is on the characteristics of people with Down syndrome. The attempt of the author to focus on the differences rather than oddness as the common notion in the society is impressive.
The positive attitude of those people can lead the readers to try to be happy with simple things.
The book underlines that life can suddenly change for people. Therefore, instead of complaining about the difficulties that we may face in life, being a problem solver and trying to find ways to cope with them is more effective.
The close interaction in the family is an effective way to show the connection of life amongst three generations. However, the strong role of the parents at the beginning of the story was nearly disappeared in the end. The only point that can be mentioned as a criticism is the fading role of parents, who are very important for children.
Overall, highlighting bullying as an important issue among children at schools and suggesting ways to tackle the problem by considering different factors and reasons is the main focus of this adventurous, enjoyable and well-plotted story which keeps readers engaged throughout. I give this book a 5 out of 5.
