Review of Unicorns Know Magic
In Unicorns Know Magic, by Charles T. Adkins, a family of unicorns move next door to the narrator and his sister, and the two families become fast friends. The unicorns show off their talents of juggling, roller skating, music, and standing on their heads, and then take the children for rides to far off countries. They also sit with the kids in their classes and help them with studying. But beware! Unicorns aren’t known for their good table manners. Read this fun-filled story to learn all about their adventures.
This is such a cute book filled with adventures of flying and camping. I liked how the unicorns had good manners at school and are said to be good line leaders and excellent readers. For a children’s book about flying off to other countries with magical creatures, I am glad the author chose to include rule following within a school setting as a good example for the young readers.
I’m glad the author made this a rhyming story. I think that aids in keeping the children’s attention and, all around, gives the story a more light-hearted feel to it. The children are well-written, as well. The focus is obviously on the unicorns, but the children are polite and appreciative of the unicorns for all their help and the fun they provide. I think it’s so important in children’s books for the characters to lead by example for the readers.
The illustrations are absolutely adorable. They are simple drawings without too many details and look as if the illustrator, Ros Webb, used watercolors. Visually, the scenes are cute and would certainly capture the attention of children.
The only negative aspect is that there were pages where the words seemed to blend into the background which made it a little hard to read. This did not, however, detract from the story at all.
I only found one typo and believe this book to be professionally edited. Overall, I rate this book five out of five stars for the overwhelmingly positive aspects.
I would recommend this book to any young reader looking for a little adventure and imagination.
