I usually don’t pick children’s book to review but Suzy Has A Secret caught my attention due to the reason that its purpose is to educate children about sexual abuse. Since I had downloaded it I was thrilled to get a glimpse of it and when I did I must say that I wasn’t at all disappointed.

Suzy Has A Secret has been designed for children in the age range of four to eight years old. It is a story of Suzy whose uncle comes to babysit while her parents are out of the home. During this time the uncle makes Suzy get involved in a play that makes her uncomfortable and scared. The uncle warns her to keep it a secret and it is a game that she cannot tell her parents about. This makes Suzy feel more uncomfortable and she becomes upset. The story then goes on further and shows how Suzy was able to confess to her parents about her uncle’s inappropriate game.

The book comprises of concise sentences that will be easily understood by children within the given age range. To make the book more fascinating, there is a large illustration on each page along with the sentence. Every page focuses on one sentence and in my opinion, this will help the child to read as well as reflect on the deeper meaning of the sentence.

One of the aspects that I really liked about this book was that the pages are not loaded with illustrations but just a single illustration of the character on a white page along with the text. This will help the child not get distracted because of several pictures and remain focused on the message of the book. The size of the text is also large enough for the child to read on their own. At the end of the book, the author has also written a note for the parents and educators on how to use this book and that add another advantage of purchasing it.

I would like to rate this book 4 out of 4 stars because the message of sexual abuse has been conveyed in an easy to understand style for the child. The parents can also use this book to read it to their children and discuss it along as to what should their child be doing in such a circumstance. Suzy Has A Secret is an ideal book for children, parents, teachers, as well as those providing social services to children who has suffered sexual abuse.
