I was raised Catholic, and while my memories of church were always positive, I remember fear of hell as a motivation for being a good person. From the very first page of When Jesus Comes Back by Daisy Hayes it's clear that love, instead, is the focus. The children's book tells us all the things a little girl (inspired by Daisy's own daughter) wants to do with Jesus the day He returns, like showing Him her toys, sharing her favorite swing, having a picnic and asking if she can have her own pair of wings in heaven. The writing is very reminiscent of reading a journal or homework assignment from a kid, making the concept even more solid.

If I could choose one word to describe the book it would definitely be "love". It's very clear that this little girl loves Jesus and can't wait for His return. She wants to share all the things she does and has with Him. In my personal opinion, that's exactly what a relationship with Jesus should be like - like a close friend/family member. She isn't afraid, she doesn't ask if mommy or daddy won't be in heaven with her, she's just excited!

Andria Cordero-Vidal's illustrations are quite unique as well. The art style is reminiscent of a kid's drawings with crayons, but they're more detailed than a typical child's drawing. They'd be on a refrigerator for sure! They lend the book even more of a genuine feeling; they really made me feel like this was a collection of thoughts and pictures from an excited little girl.

As with many children's books, this one seems very fitting for both reading to kids and having them learn to read it on their own. I didn't see any vocabulary that would be tricky for kids, and only noticed one minor grammatical error (a misspelling). The book also keeps images on their own pages, so a parent or older sibling can read the text and then easily show off an image.

While I really loved the focus on love for Jesus and the illustrations fit the book perfectly, I obviously can't recommend the book for everyone. Folks who aren't Christian won't find any use for this book, but I can wholeheartedly recommend it to those who are. As such, my rating for When Jesus Comes Back is a solid 4 out of 4 stars.
